Reading at Parkside

At Parkside Academy, we value communication skills with the belief that communication skills can impact students on both an academic and personal level.

Communication skills (including those of vocabulary, reading, writing and speaking and listening), are core skills required to be successful across all subjects that students access in their time at Parkside. Therefore, by developing these core skills, we believe that we also develop our students’ love of learning and key personal skills of resilience, independence and creativity – all skills required to prepare our students for the wider world after Parkside.

Therefore, students are provided with a wide range of opportunities in order to develop their communication skills both within and beyond the school gates. We encourage students to read for pleasure, develop their vocabulary and refine their writing skills in the opportunities that we provide for students.

Our online communication platform provides information for parents on how to support students with developing communication skills in the home environment. As well as this, our platform provides students with details about opportunities within school including how to borrow a book, key communication events, challenges and competitions.
