Character Education

Character Education at Parkside is based on the 5 key principles of LORIC that we feel encapsulates the skills needed for our students to achieve both in and out of school.
A person’s ‘character’ develops over time and in a range of contexts, and is shaped by unknown and unpredictable events.
However, a planned approach to providing opportunities to develop character-based skills and attributes has been shown to make a difference to outcomes for children and young people.
Enable pupils to develop:
- interpersonal and social effectiveness
- self-awareness
- values
- resilience
- effectiveness within a wider community
- risk management

Students are explicitly taught these skills in school, through both academic and pastoral themes and have opportunities to develop them through a range of activities.
Each of the LORIC principles has a dedicated member of the student leadership team who lead student voice and liaise with members of the school leadership team to provide future opportunities for all students.
Character Leadership
We want all of our students to have the opportunity to be leaders and this is evident through the opportunities in our student leadership structure.
Character Organisation
Organisation is key to success and ensures that our students will feel happy and confident and helps to develop time management skills.
Character Resilience
Resilience is important because it helps process difficult situations. Resilient students call on their strengths and support systems to overcome challenges and work through problems.
Character Initiative
When our students show initiative, they do things without being told; find out what they need to know; keep going when things get tough; and spot and take advantage of opportunities that others pass by.
Character Communication
Communication helps us build relationships by allowing us to share our experiences, and needs, and helps us connect to others. It’s the essence of life, allowing us to express feelings, pass on information and share thoughts.
