Gifted and Talented

Our aims at Parkside Academy include a commitment to providing a rich and varied curriculum for all of our pupils so that they will feel challenged by their work and rewarded by their results. This commitment extends to ensuring that our most able and talented pupils are stimulated and fulfilled in their work.

Those pupils who are identified as being more academically able are closely monitored to ensure the right level of challenge in their work, encouraging focus, determination and resilience in learning. A variety of differentiated classwork and home learning tasks promote the acquisition of skills, knowledge and understanding and foster critical and creative thought.

Whilst our prime concern is to cater for the academic needs of our most able and talented pupils, many benefit from the special events and classes provided through the support programme for targeted groups.

Activities offered include:

  • Brilliant Club
  • Master classes KS3
  • Challenge Reading projects
  • English G&T Programme
  • Sport enrichment
  • Science and Technology Clubs – STEM
  • Extensive MAT Science Programme
  • Leadership opportunities
  • University links
  • Science Ambassadors
  • Guest Speakers
  • 1:1 mentoring

Parkside Academy is one of only a handful of secondary schools in the North East to hold the prestigious “Challenge Award” recognising our excellent provision for high ability children.

Our KS3 pupils are invited to attend STEM sessions (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) which take place every Thursday.  Our over-subscribed STEM Club has taken part in a range of activities from CSI, where we look at plaster thumb casts and a crime scene, to making their own investigations during out STEM in a bag challenge. STEM club changes to STEAM club for a term for us to think about out impact on the environment with the grand finale of spray painting around school and our local community – bringing science to everyone at home!
