Curriculum

The Parkside Curriculum is designed to ensure that our pupils are:

  • successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum to all Year Groups with varied and flexible routes of progression personalised to the needs of individual pupils.This was recognised in the school’s last Ofsted inspection when it was recognised that
“The curriculum is tailored exceptionally well to meet the needs of all learners … allowing students of all abilities to specialise, whilst retaining breadth and balance in their choices”.

 

Years 7 and 8

In Years 7 and 8 all of our pupils have access to the same broad range of subjects delivered in different styles and proportions appropriate to the individual’s needs and abilities.

All pupils study English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, ICT, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art, Technology, Performing Arts and a Modern Foreign Language, in line with the National Curriculum.

Pupils are set in one of three bands based on their English skills and, separately, on their Mathematical skills.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic education is delivered both across the curriculum and through our innovative Inspire Days where our pupils interact with and learn from a wide range of organisations, charities and businesses.

 

Years 9, 10 and 11

During Years 9, 10 and 11, pupils will follow one of our Learning Pathways studying a selection of courses designed to ensure that every pupil can achieve success. Pupils are allocated to a Pathway following discussions between a Senior Teacher, the individual pupil and their parents.

Pupils on all of the Pathways will study a common core of subjects. These are English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Physical Education, Religious Education and Inspire.

Pupils will then be able to choose from the list of subjects below. The number of choices they are able to make and the range of subjects they can choose from will vary from Pathway to Pathway.

GCSE Subjects: Separate Sciences, History, Geography, French, German, Psychology, Sociology, Food Technology, Product Design, Textiles, Art, Physical Education, Drama, Expressive Art, Music, Business Studies, Health & Social Care and Leisure & Tourism.

BTEC Subjects: Art & Design and Sports Studies

The majority of pupils will study for GCSE Science and ICT qualifications but some may study for BTEC Science or OCR National ICT, depending on ability and likely outcomes.
