We, at Parkside Academy, are committed to equality.

We work hard to ensure that every pupil may fulfil their potential, no matter what his/her background or personal circumstances. We embed principles of fairness and equality across our entire curriculum and school day, in pastoral support and in after school activities.

We recognise our specific public sector equality duty, in the exercise of our functions, having due regard to the need to:

  • eliminate discrimination, harassment and any other conduct that is prohibited under the Act.
  • advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.
  • foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it.

Special Educational Needs

Parkside Academy will do its best to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil who has special needs and those needs are made known to all who are likely to teach them.

Our guiding principles are that:

  • All children can learn and make progress and deserve to have their progress regularly assessed, recognised and celebrated
  • All children with SEN have the right to a broad and balanced curriculum, relevant and differentiated, which demonstrates progression and coherence
  • All children with SEN will be valued as full members of the school community
  • All children with SEN and their parents have the right to be involved in assessing progress and determining goals. A partnership should exist between the pupil, parents and the school.

Behaviour: Statement of general principles

Parkside Academy expects and promotes behaviour based on the importance of a sense of individual responsibilities, respect for others and cooperation.

School:

  • To establish and communicate clearly measures to ensure good order, respect and discipline
  • To ensure the school Behaviour Policy does not discriminate against any pupil on, for example, grounds of race, gender disability or sexual orientation, and that it promotes good relations between different communities
  • To ensure staff are clear about the extent of their disciplinary authority and receive necessary professional development on behaviour strategies 
  • To support, praise and, as appropriate, reward pupils’ good behaviour
  • To apply sanctions fairly, consistently, proportionately and reasonably – taking into account SEN, disability and the needs of vulnerable children and offering support as appropriate
  • To make alternative provision from day six for Fixed Period excluded pupils and, where appropriate, to arrange reintergration interviews for parents at the end of a fixed period exclusion
  • To take all reasonable measures to protect the safety and wellbeing of staff and pupils

including preventing all forms of bullying and dealing effectively with reports and complaints about bullying

  • To ensure staff model good behaviour and do not denigrate pupils or colleagues
  • To promote positive behaviour through active development of pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural skills
  • To keep parents informed of their child’s behaviour
  • To work with other agencies to promote commuity cohesion and safety


Pupils:

  • To follow reasonable instructions by school staff, obey school rules and accept sanctions in an appropriate way
  • To act as positive ambassadors for the school at all times including when off school premises
  • Not to bring inappropriate or unlawful items to school
  • To show respect to school staff, fellow pupils, school property and the school environment
  • Never to denigrate, harm or bully other pupils or staff


Parents:

  • To respect the school’s Behaviour Policy and the disciplinary authority of school staff
  • To help ensure that their child follows reasonable instructions by school staff and adheres to school expectations
  • To send their child to school each day punctually, suitably clothed, fed, rested and equipped and ready to learn
  • To ensure school staff are aware of any SEN issues or other personal factors which may result in their child displaying behaviour outside the norm
  • To be prepared to work with the school to support their child’s positive behaviour, including attending any meetings if requested

Charging

A number of educational activities are organised during the school year to enhance the curriculum and parents are sometimes asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost, particularly towards transport costs. Without such contributions, many worthwhile educational activities would not be possible. Parents will be fully informed in advance of any costs involved for activities in which their daughter/son participate.

Complaints Policy
